How do I choose the best video partner for me?

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

Our business is about making our clients look good. It's what we're best at. Sometimes though, it can be hard to turn the lens on ourselves. With all the talk of noise in the market (and the video production market is noisy), we need to ensure that our volume button goes up to 11. Thankfully we have some good ideas about standing out from the crowd.

So, when you're looking for the best video partner for your business, what do you look for? Are you searching for the best price or are you looking for a partner that will work well with you? Do you want reliability more than anything or are you happy to let the experts take over? Either way, choosing the right video partner is a tough decision. We've outlined here some of the ways in which you can choose the best partner for you.

Your first port of call should be to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What are my goals? Before you start your search, it will really pay to define your project goals. For instance, what type of video do you want? What message do you want to convey? Who or what is your target audience? Understand these and you will have a much clearer idea of what you want from your video partner and the end product that they create.

  2. How do I choose from this long list of producers? Research, research and more research. You'll need to view lots of video production companies, see their output, check out their testimonials and take a look at some of their previous clients. Look at their portfolio and see if their style aligns with what you are looking for. Check their website and social media pages to see how active and engaged they are with their audience. You need to take the time to find a video partner who will listen to you and understand what you need. Remember, more than anything, their job is to make you look good.

  3. Can I work with this company? Look for a video partner that is professional, reliable, and communicates well. A great production company will take the time to understand your needs, explain their process, and set clear expectations for the project.

  4. What's my budget? Get quotes from multiple production companies and compare them. Be wary of companies that offer very low prices as this may indicate they are inexperienced or cut corners on quality.

  5. How flexible are they? Some things in life are as certain as death and taxes and that is that things don't always go according to plan. This is very true of video. You'll need to choose a company that is flexible and can adapt to changes or unexpected situations. A great production company will always be able to work with you to make sure that the end product exceeds your expectations.

Of course, once you have done all of your research and answered all these questions, you'll have a much firmer idea of what you want from your video partner so the next step is to either create a short list and start calling because you won't get a better sense of your future partner than having a quick chat about your vision. Once you've spoken to them you'll know who's right for you.
